Passado e presente das relações da Gamboa de Baixo com seu entorno e a luta de seus moradores pela sobrevivência no espaço

Abstract

Through an interpretation of the historical development of the Gamboa locality, in Salvador, the present study of urban anthropology seeks to understand the situation of the Gamboa de Baixo community, located in that same historical area. Initially, the dissertation examined how, since colonial Brazil, Gamboa's relationship took place with the rest of the city. This relationship, as I argue, was, over time, restructured by two main events: first, by rearranging its region of influence based on the concentration of port activities in the capital in a single space; and, second, by the physical modification of its surroundings with the construction of Avenida Contorno. This last interference caused the division of Gamboa into Gamboa de Cima and Gamboa de Baixo, causing, until today, great repercussions for the life of the inhabitants of the lower part of the slope. Articulating socio-economic data of Gamboa de Baixo residents with field research, the study sought, on the one hand, to map the current sieges inflicted on its inhabitants; and, on the other hand, to identify articulations and strategies of struggle of the residents for the rupture or fissure of those enclosures.
