      <title>A requalificação da orla marítima de Salvador: as tramas da gentrificação comercial</title>

Abstract: This thesis aims to analyze the waterfront redevelopment of Salvador in middle-class &#xD;
neighborhoods, based on interventions from the “Nova Orla de Salvador” Project, &#xD;
implemented by the Municipal Government, identifying the social impacts on restaurant &#xD;
consumption practices. It considers the empirical transformations in the Barra and Rio &#xD;
Vermelho neighborhoods, both historical and tourist areas. The research starts from the &#xD;
hypothesis that large-scale urban projects affect spatial configuration and alter forms of &#xD;
sociability. It seeks to understand the strategies of commercial gentrification, the &#xD;
transformations in usage patterns, and the socioterritorial tensions arising in these &#xD;
neighborhoods. The theoretical framework combines contributions from Ramírez-Casas &#xD;
(2018) on neoliberal urbanism, Vainer (2013) on large urban projects, and Cócola Gant &#xD;
(2015) on commercial gentrification, providing a critical and interdisciplinary approach. &#xD;
The methodology adopts Yin’s (2010) multiple case study method and Bahre’s (2018) &#xD;
comparative ethnography, proposing and applying the “sociological sitting” and content &#xD;
analysis. Data collection included documentary research and a sample of 10 restaurants, &#xD;
categorized as Traditional, Exclusive, Hype, Prime, and Informal (“pé no chão”). &#xD;
Fieldwork was conducted from January 2024 to March 2025, through direct observation &#xD;
and interviews. The results indicate that, despite increased tourism following the &#xD;
waterfront redevelopment, commercial gentrification creates a paradox: it aims to &#xD;
enhance the territory but leads to symbolic displacement, fragments sociability, and &#xD;
reinforces class boundaries, without solving—and sometimes worsening—the &#xD;
neighborhoods’ structural problems (infrastructure and safety). The spatial redesign &#xD;
created enclaves of distinction for high-end consumers, while small businesses, unable to &#xD;
keep up with rising costs (rent, taxes, and operating expenses), were displaced or replaced &#xD;
by enterprises aligned with new gourmet urban consumption patterns. It is concluded that &#xD;
processes of commercial gentrification are not linear—they involve tensions, ambiguities, &#xD;
and often induce precariousness. The thesis contributes to advancing debates on &#xD;
commercial gentrification in middle-class neighborhoods and to developing strategies &#xD;
and public policies. It also supported the creation of the research line Urban Restructuring &#xD;
and Social Inequalities: Sociology of Large Projects and Neoliberal Urbanism, within the &#xD;
Science and Resistance research group at UNEB.

      <title>Antifeminismo de Estado: uma análise sociopolítica da ascensão das parlamentares antifeministas no Brasil</title>

Abstract: The 2023-2028 legislature represents the highest number of women in the history of the Brazilian Federal Chamber, with 93 female deputies occupying 18% of the seats. Within this numerical advance, the consolidation of women aligned with the far-right can be observed, acting against historical gender equity agendas and shaping State antifeminism, which aims to institutionalize discourses and actions that counter the achievements gained through feminist struggles. Based on the hypothesis that the presence of antifeminist federal deputies contributes to legislative setbacks in the promotion of gender equity, this research analyzed how their discourses, propositions, and strategies articulate politically. A total of 359 bills proposed by five members of the Liberal Party (PL) – Bia Kicis, Carla Zambelli, Caroline de Toni, Chris Tonietto, and Júlia Zanatta – were examined, with 29 bills standing out for presenting explicitly antifeminist content. Their positions regarding the Pay Equity Law (Law 14.611/2023), the Law on Combating Political Violence against Women (Law 14.192/2021), and the Statute of the Unborn Child were also investigated. Based on content analysis, the empirical investigation was guided by three interdependent categories: neoliberalism, religious conservatism, and anti-gender politics, while the political representation model of these deputies was analyzed in light of Iris Marion Young’s political theory (2000; 2006), which categorizes representation by perspective, opinion, and interest. The analysis revealed that the deputies operate within a discursive logic that articulates economic interests, religiously grounded moral values, and an exclusionary and biologizing view of gender. The study further demonstrates that, although there are efforts to consolidate State antifeminism within institutional politics, the presence and actions of progressive women, feminists, and femocrats have been crucial in containing these initiatives. It concludes that antifeminism in Parliament is not merely an ideological divergence but a profound dispute over the meaning of democracy and women’s rights in contemporary Brazil, operating through a politics of exclusion, discipline, and symbolic and material violence, mobilizing fear as a central emotion to sustain its project of power and reaffirming that in Brazil antifeminism is a strategic and structuring counter-movement of the far right.

Abstract: The distinct dynamics, movements, and forms of sociopolitical mobilization that emerge in Brazil’s peripheral territories have, in recent decades, aroused growing interest within Sociology and Anthropology, especially in urban studies. The debate surrounding the various forms of political organization, cultural resistance, and the construction of citizenship and identity has shown that, beyond formal institutional instances, distinct forms of activism and sociopolitical agency have been gaining strength in the peripheries and in other popular urban territories. Alongside the consolidation of this agency, individuals may redefine themselves and (re)discover their identity through the countless experiences that weave through their life trajectories. Therefore, this research reflects on the interplay between “being and acting,” which can be analyzed through the reconstruction of the Life History of a community activist living in a peripheral territory of the city of Salvador, the Bairro da Paz. The consolidation of the analysis thus lies in understanding how the sociopolitical agency developed by individuals living in peripheral territories can be both revealing and (re)formative of their own identity, while the territory itself also can transform and reinvents its collective identity. To this end, the research adopted the qualitative methodological strategy of Life History (LH), combined with the use of various investigative techniques and analyses of a more ethnographic nature.

Abstract: This research aims to analyze the uses, counter-uses, and social practices present on Rua da Paciência, after the revitalization of the waterfront in the Rio Vermelho neighborhood in Salvador. The revitalization is part of a larger project called the Nova Orla Project, carried out by the City Hall of Salvador, starting in 2014. The main objective of the project was to enhance the Rio Vermelho neighborhood as a place for consumption and tourism in the city, and for this purpose, throughout its process and implementation, it went through moments of disputes and tensions. The project was designed and executed to favor the higher social classes of the city, as well as Brazilian and foreign tourists. However, after the revitalization was completed, Rua da Paciência became the stage for processes of counter-uses and resignifications by the population, giving this space a new dimension. Nevertheless, these popular appropriations soon went through a process of surveillance and control. Nowadays, the counter-uses of Rua da Paciência no longer follow the same patterns as the previous effervescence, but they still maintain distinct meanings and appropriations by the population. Thus, highlighting a process of flows and refluxes of sociability in the area
