Abstract: This study aims to analyze the impact of food and nutrition insecurity (IAN) on the agegrade distortion of Brazilian students enrolled in the basic education system, based on the database of the special supplement of the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNAD Contínua) of 2023. To achieve this objective, matching techniques, such as PSM, and reweighting methods, such as inverse probability weighting (IPW) and weighting with regression adjustment (IPWRA), were used. Subsequently, a multivalued treatment approach was adopted to measure differently the effects of different levels of IAN on school delay. The results show that severe IAN has an impact on students of both sexes, for urban and rural areas of the country. Specifically, the impacts are more pronounced for female students in urban areas (6.9 percentage points) compared to those in rural areas (6.2 p.p.). Furthermore, for male students, the impact is also relevant, with the impact being greater in rural areas (5.9 p.p.) compared to urban areas (5.5 p.p.). These findings highlight the importance of public policies that are sensitive to gender and territorial inequalities, since the effects of IAN on education vary according to the context analyzed, with a higher impact among the most socioeconomically vulnerable population.

Abstract: The general objective of this study is to analyze the prevalence of food and nutritional insecurity (FNI) in the Brazilian population, differentiating its incidence between urban and rural environments. To this end, a multinomial logit model was used with data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNAD Contínua) of 2023. It was identified that factors such as education of the head of the household,
and per capita income positively influence the population's food condition, while single-parent households headed by women and with more children face higher levels of FNI. It was also observed that white skin color is associated with a lower probability of FNI, reflecting ethnic disparities in Brazilian society. By separating the estimates and controlling for household status and characteristics of the reference person, FNI in rural areas, especially in its most severe form, is, on average, milder compared to that occurring in urban areas. Given the above, the need for multifaceted public policies that integrate food production and distribution with actions to stimulate schooling, productive inclusion, protection of children and mitigation of regional disparities is highlighted, promoting a more comprehensive approach to food and nutritional security in Brazil.

Abstract: One of the key factors in increasing productivity in companies is management. An effective management practice is kaizen. Originating in Japan, the basic concept of kaizen is continuous improvement with the involvement of the entire workforce. Using the company-stratified data set obtained from Brazilian industry and innovation surveys, this article quantitatively assesses whether kaizen has affected the performance of national companies. Initial results suggest a productivity premium for kaizen adopters; however, when this materializes, it is not detectable in the short term. Furthermore, the impact on innovation is observable after kaizen implementation. Understanding these results from a qualitative approach, this analysis highlights the importance of this tool in innovation, especially in improving worker time on the production line, as well as kaizen's long-term vision for productivity.

Abstract: One of the key drivers for a firm’s productivity growth is management. One management practice considered cost effective is Kaizen. Originally from Japan, the Kaizen basic concept is continuous improvement with the involvement of the full workforce. Using firm-level dataset from Brazil’s innovation and manufacturing surveys, this paper evaluates quantitatively whether Kaizen has impacted the performance of domestic firms. Our initial results suggest a productivity premium on Kaizen adopters, yet when it materializes is not detectable in the short-term. Moreover, impact on innovation is observable after Kaizen implementation. Understanding these outcomes with a qualitative approach, our analysis highlights the importance of Kaizen on innovation, especially by improving worker’s time at production line as well as the long-term vision of Kaizen on productivity.
